Delhi – Narkanda – Delhi on the Ford Endeavour

This road trip took place from the 13th January 2012 to 16th January 2012.

The team, Bobby, Arpit, Bunny and Shantonil (L to R)

‘White Gold’ – this is what four of us from Gaadi.com wanted to see, feel and experience in the second weekend of January. The 2012 Auto Expo had been hectic, messy and tiring for us and what better way to unwind than to head to the snowed out roads of Himachal Pradesh. While visiting the Ford Hall at the Expo, all it took was a two minute discussion with the good guys to have the 3.0 4×4 Endeavour AT (automatic) delivered to us the following Friday. The impatient souls that we are, we decided to head to Himachal Pradesh right after work itself! Four of us were
1. Bunny Punia, head, content
2. Bobby Roy, chief photographer
3. Shantonil Nag, budding photographer, content contributor
4. Arpit Philips, budding photographer, content contributor

By 7pm, we had exited the mad rush hour traffic of New Delhi and were cruising at a lazy 100-110km/h on the ever improving NH-1 that leads to North India. A half hour dinner break at Murthal and we were back on the traffic less and slightly foggy highway. Post Ambala, we left NH-1 and took NH-22 that would lead us to the higher reaches. The Zirakpur to Kalka stretch is now a complete four-lane affair though the Kalka bypass was yet to open (as of 3rd week of Jan 2012). The Endeavour in the meantime was easily maintaining cruising speeds of over 110km/h which meant we were averaging 70-75km/hr easily.

View from our hotel's balcony in the morning

By mid-night we had started the uphill drive to Shimla. Isolated roads meant our speeds were pretty high and at Barog, the strong winds brought us our first surprise – chunks of hardened snow had fallen from the hill tops on the road! This also gave us an indication of things to come our way and also made us stop at the Chail cut-off where we sat next to a bonfire that the local cops had burnt out of a tree!

By 2am, we had entered Shimla. The air was chillingly cold and we directly headed to our hotel for the night near the Victory tunnel. Inches of brown (dirty) snow lying around bore testimony to the fact that the last snowfall was a couple of days back only. The Endeavour also got its first taste of snow on the steep incline road to the hotel’s parking – it didnt even need 4×4 to negotiate it though.

Sleeping at 4am meant we opened our eyes by noon only. Breakfast was skipped and a heavy lunch ordered, over which we discussed on what to do this day. Shimla is known for its happening mall road and this was our plan for the evening. The air was chilly though there was simply no sign of a possibility of snowfall. Dejected, we walked back to our hotel and hit the bed with our fingers crossed only to wake up to the sound of rain drops the next morning!

View from the Mall road of the snow peaks

We were told that rains are the first sign of snow and the same was confirmed by the hotel staff while we were checking out for our drive to Narkanda. It was snowing heavily ahead in Kufri and Fagu which meant traffic jams due to incapale 4×2 machines was sure to happen! Hence, it was decided that we would hit Narkanda from the long way round, via Basantpur and low lying areas. This did mean that we ended up driving for extra 2 hours but the moment we joined back on NH-22 beyond Narkanda, snowflakes greeted us. This is also where we stocked up essentials like mineral water and were told that we could no way make it up to Narkanda. The crazy nuts we were, within ten minutes, we saw a sign board with inches of snow which read “Narkanda – 20km”

The white road leading to Narkanda

Traffic was non existant and we came across a lone JCB machine, the driver of which warned us not to go ahead. A kilometer later we came across a stuck Innova and from there on, it was us and Mother Nature. We were simply driving on inches of soft fresh snow and it was hard to judge the road as all we could see was snow, snow and more snow. The Endeavour in the meantime proved it mettle and didn’t even need 4L to negotiate the steep sections. We stopped numerous times, played in the snow, shot pictures and videos and almost abused the mighty Ford SUV by sliding, drifting and driving in deep snow on the side of the road – it never gave up!

A heavy vehicle combined with a huge 3000cc engine and automatic transmission translates into gas guzzling behaviour! It needed a fill up and the attendant at the lone snowed out fuel pump at Narkanda was shocked to see a vehicle drive up from this side. With the Endeavour filled, it was time to carry on. Narkanda did tempt us with its white landscape but we decided to stay at Fagu due to its close proximity with Shimla. At some place before Theog, the Endeavour was parked on the side on the road in roughly two feet of snow, songs blaring, windows semi-open and four of us having a ball in the heavy snowfall, well, literally. We danced, we sang and we faught with huge snowballs and simply soaked in the magnificant white beauty around. This was as white as it could get ever! Numerous stops for pictures and videos meant it got dark by the time we hit the town of Theog. We hadnt come across any traffic though a couple of crazy locals were trying to negotiate the terrain with their Maruti Altos!

Snowed out!

We kept driving endlessly in dark with heavy snowfall for company when suddenly we saw the ‘Kufri’ sign-board! It seemed that the on-board GPS wasn’t working properly, probably due to heavy snowfall and accumulation of snow in the sky! With Fagu behind us and no electricity in Kufri, we decided to head to same hotel in Shimla, 30minutes away. Snowfall was our constant company and it was funny to see locals in Shimla trying to drive their way around in 4×2 vehicles. Infact, this was our favourite pass time – we simply sat in the balcony and watched cars and buses sliding around on the steep road in front of us! The Endeavour in the meatime remained parked in the empty parking, being the only vehicle to climb up the steep and slippery incline to the hotel.

We were cold and hungry though completely satisfied! Mother Nature, without a doubt, had showered more snow on us than we had bargained for. We did take risks, but the confidence that the Ford Endeavour showed us was to be blamed for this. This vehicle simply refuses to give up – be it driving in a couple of foot of snow or munching highway miles back to Delhi at speeds good enough to shame quite a few premium sedans! Lastly, this trip also shatters the age old notion that an automatic robs a SUV of its real character. For pure hardcore off-road lovers, the Endeavour fits the bill of an easy to drive SUV with sheer unbeatable capabilities. The pricing is the icing on the cake!

Day 6 for Team Gaadi – all that happened

Day 6 : 10th Dec, Jaipur to Pushkar

We updated you on the Team Gaadi’s progress on Day 6 here - http://drives.gaadi.com/discover-smart-drive/day-6-for-team-gaadi-jaipur-to-pushkar/
After having a heavy late lunch at a road side joint on NH-8, the team continued its journey towards Pushkar. However, with 20minutes, they came across the setting sun which was too good a view to ignore. The team stopped for a few pictures and also realised that it was a partial lunar eclipse this day! This meant Bobby got amazing shots of not only the moon, but the Figo in the frame as well!

The video crew also got busy and the duo gave them a few tips and bytes before moving onto Pushkar in the dark.

This is not un-real : Bobby's creativity, the awesome lens he uses and a bit of photoshop :)

The highway was a dream till Ajmer bypass where it got pretty bad. The Pushkar bypass was interesting – dark, isolated and a narrow single lane affair! The Garmin GPS device in their car again proved to be unreliable and Bunny had to resort to using his phone which had Google Maps installed!
The team stayed at the Pushkar Fort – an ethnic place, which had a fantastic view of the hills around – something that guys saw the next morning!

Bunny relaxes with the Figo!

Day 6 for Team Gaadi – Jaipur to Pushkar

Day 6 began brilliantly for Team Gaadi. They finished the pending task for yesterday though had to do it in half the time. After getting the puzzle piece at Jantar Mantar, the team got their next task which involved finding a key in one of the chambers at Hawa Mahal. Though they got there pretty quick, finding the key was a major task as the structure has multiple levels – both Bobby and Bunny got a good work-out session this morning :)
The guys spent a while discovering Jaipur on a rickshaw (Hawa Mahal / Jantar Mantar part of Jaipur has messy traffic!) and later moved towards Pushkar via Ajmer. The NH8 is simply brilliant and they are making full use of the Figo and its fantastic diesel motor. As we type this (4:40pm), the team has halted at a road side joint for late dinner.
Enjoy this capture by Bobby – we will update you with more pictures later in the day

Day 5 for Team Gaadi – all that happened!

After solving the first task in the morning, Team Gaadi went for a quick breakfast bite to McDonalds Manesar. Their they got their second surprise task – the team was to head to Jaipur and find a place whose name meant a measuring instrument. We did know it means Jantar Mantar but Bunny felt the place is only in New Delhi. Bobby however was pretty sure that there is a similar place in Jaipur too!
The duo left for Jaipur and thankfully most of the stretch is now a good 4-lane affair till Jaipur. Shots were taken enroute and while Bobby divulged in photography, Bunny made tea at a highway dhaba for the crew :)

Shooting (both stills and video) meant it took time for the duo to get closer to Jaipur. Hardly 15km away from Amer Fort, the team got to know about a massive blockade due to a small riot on the highway wherein a bus was burnt that had moved down a local person (fatal accident!). This also meant the team wasted an hour and had to take the bypass to get into the city. Jantar Mantar, being a public attraction had closed down by that time and hence the second task for Day 5 remained un-done. The whole team spoke over dinner and it was decided that this task would be done on Day 6, but in half the time, as the duo knew where the place was already.

Day 5 Updates for Team Gaadi

First task for Day 5 in New Delhi

Today’s task for team Gaadi was to find world’s tallest brick minaret in Delhi, and they successfully completed this task. It was not tough, really, to locate the Qutab Minar which is ofcourse world’s tallest minaret. The team was at work since early morning, and finally after the task, the guys are now moving on to their next destination, Jaipur (Rajasthan).

Bunny Punia expresses his happiness after Team Gaadi completed this relatively easy task in Delhi.

Day 4 starts in Delhi – Team Gaadi’s home-town

Day 4 for Team A on Ford’s Discover Smart Drive Season 2 starts in New Delhi – hometown for both Bunny and Bobby.
The task for today is shown above – pretty simple considering both are from this city – they are currently in Gurgaon and north of Gurgaon, you have both the Pitampura and INA market Delhi Haats – the team has decided to go to the one in INA as that is the bigger one of the two!

Day 2 for Team Gaadi ends on a bad note!

Day 2 (6th Dec) didnt really end in a very good way for Team Gaadi.

We had left Amritsar after lunch and a quick service for Chandigarh via NH-1. However, 50km down the highway, we encountered a massive blockade that was done by the farmers over the bridge that goes over the Beas river. Infact, all the other small routes via villages and other towns were blocked as well. So in a nutshell, there wasnt really a way to get from Amritsar towards Jallandar / Chandigarh / Delhi. We spent a good 3-4 hours in the jam, managed to come back to a safer place and finally by 8pm, took a room in the nearest highway motel. The task for the day was done nicely but we cudnt reach the destination.

Hence, team Gaadi and the whole back-up team and the video crew had to spend the night 45km fro Amritsar, on the NH-1 in a highway motel.

Day 3 however had surprises, the good ones – report coming up soon. Keep following us and supporting us at http://www.facebook.com/FordFigo?sk=app_273225672716750

Team Gaadi finishes Day 2′s task as well

Day 2 begin in Amritsar where we needed to be at Ram Bagh. Within minutes of us putting the task online, our fans, friends and followers helped us a lot. Infact, two of them, Varun and his pal, even came down to the place to help us locate the Ford flag. This is also something we wish to show to the other three teams – talk to the local guys, they can be your best help!
Ram Bagh also was the place where Bobby shot the Figo – here are a few pictures!

Day 2 begins – the Task for Team Gaadi is…

Day 2 has begin and before we leave for Chandigarh from Amritsar, we have a task at hand. This basically is “We got to be at the palace of the erstwhile king (of Amritsar) – and find a big gemstone! “

Come on guys, help us in this. What could be this place? We are currently at Mall Road area!

Team Gaadi – Day 1 ends in Amritsar

Bunny (left) and Bobby (right)

Day  1 ends in Amritsar for Team Gaadi. Our task for the day was to find the puzzle at an aquatic world where we had to be swallowed by a BIG fish – the words ‘aquatic’ and ‘big fish’ meant that it could be an aquarium. We questioned a few locals and voila, had the answer – it was the aquarium at Bahu Fort! We were given two hours for this but managed to dismiss it off in 30 mins flat.
Lunch, numerous breaks, video shots and bytes, and more breaks meant we reached Amritsar, our destination for Day 1, pretty late. However, that said, we also noticed a lot of things which we would like to share with the other three teams
1. India is the land of senseless drivers. At night, most of them won’t be using dippers – so be alert and don’t lose your cool
2. Video shooting does take time – so drive and plan accordingly. Sharing your stuff with the world is important no doubt, but don’t let the shoots and the stops irritate u at the same time :)
3. Fuel economy – very important. We tanked up just after leaving Jammu and have driven around 210-215km on this fill – the needle is still up there and has come down by probably 20%. Be gentle on the gas, lift of the pedal when you see traffic / red-light ahead and so on. Simple things do help a lot
4. We, as the mentors, have noticed that the number of updates and sharing mechanism with the world isnt up to the mark. Pull up your socks guys – go, share, and have more fun with more people!

More tips coming up soon :) All the best for tomorrow and to support any of the teams, visit http://www.facebook.com/FordFigo?sk=app_273225672716750
